This week we went to see a Nutritionist about ways to increase Kinsey's calorie intake. Kinsey hasn't really gained any weight in the last 3 or so months and she hasn't grown at all in about 5 or 6 months. (She's been hovering around 9 lbs 8 oz and 29-30" depending on how much she straightens out.) This has coincided with when she began eating less formula and more solid food. Since the cleft surgery I've been tracking her calories and she only gets about 500-600 calories each day, even though I feed her the highest calorie foods I can find. The nutritionist confirmed that she should be eating 900-1000 calories each day, almost double what she eats sometimes! So, she gave us some ways we can increase the calories - 1 - There's a product called DuoCal which is a powder you can add to food or drink to increase the calories. A tablespoon adds 45 calories. It doesn't change the taste or texture of the food. I was telling a friend about this and she actually had a can of it that she'd never used for her son so she gave it to me. We've used it a few times and Kinsey doesn't seem to mind it at all. The alternative to this would be to add vegetable, flax or olive oil to her food to accomplish the same thing.
2 - There's a pediatric supplement drink, similar to PediaSure, that is Soy-based that we could give her instead of the regular formula. It has 32 calories per ounce as opposed to 20 per ounce for the regular formula. We just bought some today but haven't tried it yet.
3 - We recently started giving her the Very Vanilla Soy Milk, which is the highest calorie soy milk (even more than regular dairy milk).
Our immediate goal is to get her up to 20 pounds. Longer term, we're hoping that she will start growing again and keep putting on some weight. She is 50th percentile for her weight to height so she is proportionate, but she's only 5th percentile for her weight and 10th for her height. It's still impressive that she's on the growth chart, but she's been losing ground since she hasn't changed in several months and since she was growing so well before, we don't think the Trisomy is why she's not growing now.
We're also giving Kinsey more table food these days and she's getting better at picking things up and putting them in her mouth. I've discovered that she likes crackers, which is great because they're high calorie! Here's a video of her checking out some cereal, which it seems she didn't like: http://youtu.be/ZGGAfP0a8Xo She's also getting closer to learning to hold her cup on her own. She mostly holds it with her teeth, but she is learning to put her hands up and hold it:
Also this week, at the encouragement of the pediatrician, we started brushing Kinsey's teeth. I bought her a tiny little toothbrush and some strawberry flavored toothpaste. I wasn't sure what she was going to think about it, but she likes it - opens her mouth right up for it and even thinks it's funny!
Last weekend we took Kinsey to Disney one more time before we leave FL. We think she liked it more now that she's more aware of things around her than she was when we went for her birthday. This time she met Mickey and Minnie and she was excited about that - she was all about their gloves and really liked Minnie more than Mickey! We bought her a big Minnie Mouse stuffed animal that she now sleeps with and she is still really interested in the glove! She loved It's a Small World and the Carousel again and this time we also took her on some new rides like Winnie the Pooh, Snow White and even the Haunted Mansion (which she liked a lot!). Here are some pictures from Disney and a video of her riding the carousel with Jamie: http://youtu.be/rOu_J-f_vwQ
